Charles Schwab is expanding its cryptocurrency services to include transfers of Bitcoin and Ethereum to and from external wallets, the brokerage announced through updated account documentation.
The phased rollout allows approved customers to move supported digital assets outside the Schwab platform to other custody arrangements. Users must complete identity verification and may face security checks and waiting periods before wallet addresses are approved for transfers.
Enhanced Customer Control
The transfer capability represents a significant step beyond the direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading that Schwab has been gradually rolling out to eligible clients. Customers can now choose whether to hold digital assets with the brokerage or move them to alternative custody solutions.
Schwab has noted that cryptocurrency holdings through its platform are not covered by FDIC insurance, distinguishing digital assets from conventional bank deposits.
Widening Institutional Adoption
The expansion reflects a broader shift in the financial services industry. Traditional brokerages with existing customer bases and established infrastructure are increasingly offering cryptocurrency services alongside conventional investment products.
Schwab has indicated it may expand supported assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum in the future. The competitive landscape has evolved from whether traditional institutions would support digital assets to how comprehensively they will integrate cryptocurrency into their core services.
