Circle has launched StableFX on Arc, its blockchain network, offering approved institutions 24/7 access to stablecoin-based foreign exchange settlement. The service allows businesses to exchange stablecoin-denominated currencies outside traditional banking hours and settlement windows.
The platform sources pricing from multiple liquidity providers through a request-for-quote system. Once a trade is agreed, both counterparties fund a settlement smart contract where both legs settle together or neither does. This payment-versus-payment structure is designed to reduce principal risk, the scenario where one party sends currency before receiving the other side of the trade.
StableFX also enables immediate settlement or programmable windows where trades can be netted before final completion. Circle positions the system as back-end financial infrastructure rather than a crypto-native payment product.
The platform currently supports multiple stablecoin currencies, including Circle's USDC and EURC alongside tokens representing the Australian dollar, Brazilian real, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar, and South African rand.
From a regulatory standpoint, Circle Technology Services provides the APIs and smart contracts but does not take custody of exchanged assets or transmit funds on behalf of users. Participating institutions remain responsible for their own licensing and compliance obligations.
The service tests whether regulated institutions can use blockchain-based rails to manage currency exchange, reduce settlement risk, and maintain capital productivity outside conventional market hours.
