Circle's Arc Blockchain Flooded With Memecoins on Launch Day

Circle's institutional Arc blockchain, backed by BlackRock and other major financial firms, processed 7.83 million transactions on its first day, but nearly all activity was memecoin trading rather than payments. Day-one DEX volume reached $82 million as tokens collapsed 50-80% from launch highs.

Circle's Arc Blockchain Flooded With Memecoins on Launch Day

Circle's Arc blockchain launched Wednesday with 11 founding validators including BlackRock, Visa, Mastercard, and DTCC. Despite positioning as an institutional payments network, the chain was immediately dominated by memecoin speculation on its opening day.

The network processed 7.83 million transactions in 24 hours, but only approximately 624,000 USDC transfers occurred over the chain's entire lifespan. About 400,000 new accounts were created in a day, and more than 73,000 contracts were deployed. Average fees quadrupled to three cents.

Day-one decentralized exchange volume reached roughly $82 million, substantially lower than the $878 million Robinhood Chain processed during its own memecoin surge in July. Top memecoin tokens including TOLLY, LONG, and COOL declined 56% to 77% from launch highs.

Circle's VP of product for Arc, Rachel Mayer, shared an AI-generated image promoting DUKE, a memecoin, stating it was CEO Jeremy Allaire's dog. The post reached approximately 1 million views and generated criticism that Circle was promoting tokens to drive network activity.

Trader sentiment turned negative quickly, with some community members declaring the network "cooked" after tokens collapsed within hours. Critics noted the contradiction between Arc's institutional positioning and the memecoin-dominated launch, suggesting the company mishandled community expectations.

The chain itself operated as designed, with half-second block times and no congestion. DeFi platforms including Aave and Morpho went live on the network. Arc's largest token, ARGUS, holds a $16 million market capitalization, while Circle's own products cirBTC and EURC rank as the second and third largest tokens.
