Circle has identified AI agents as a distinct customer segment for its USDC stablecoin. In an October 12, 2026 appearance on the NYSE/ICE House Podcast, Circle Chief Commercial Officer Kash Razzaghi outlined three advantages the stablecoin offers to autonomous agents: programmability, low transaction costs, and availability at any hour.
According to Circle's mid-October 2026 figures, the company facilitated 165 million transactions involving approximately 80,000 agents. USDC accounted for 99-99.8% of transaction value on the x402 protocol, a payments standard designed for agent-driven transactions. Circle noted that USDC enables near-zero-cost settlement, with transactions as small as $0.000001.
Agent Stack Infrastructure
These metrics stem from Circle's May 11, 2026 launch of its Agent Stack, a product suite designed specifically for autonomous AI agents. The stack comprises four components: Agent Wallets for holding funds, an Agent Marketplace for transactions, the Circle CLI for developer integration, and nanopayments functionality for ultra-small transactions.
Circle positions the tools as enabling agents to transact programmatically across different chains and protocols. The company argues that traditional payment methods carry higher costs and onboarding requirements that make them impractical for high-frequency machine-to-machine commerce.
Market Positioning and Considerations
Circle is positioning USDC as the default settlement asset for what it calls the agentic economy. While the transaction volume is substantial, context is important: individual payments can be as small as $0.000001, meaning transaction count differs significantly from economic value.
The concentration of transaction value on a single stablecoin also warrants consideration. A market where one issuer captures 99-99.8% of transaction value on a key protocol indicates the agent economy's payment layer currently depends heavily on a single provider.
