Coinbase is expanding the trading functionalities of the Base App by integrating perpetual futures via Hyperliquid. Qualified customers now have access to more than 290 perpetual futures markets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, tokenized stocks, and commodities.
The newly added product features leverage of up to 50x for specific assets, with trade execution handled by Hyperliquid. Chintan Turakhia, Coinbase’s Head of Engineering, noted that perpetual futures represent roughly 75% of all cryptocurrency trading and are the most requested product at Coinbase. The integration allows traders to access these markets directly from their existing self-custodial wallets without switching platforms.
Shift Toward Trading and Derivatives
Perpetual futures enable speculation on asset prices without holding the underlying assets, and the contracts do not feature an expiration date. Coinbase offers varying leverage limits depending on the specific market. While increased leverage can amplify potential gains, it also carries a higher risk of liquidation.
This integration marks another strategic pivot for the Base App. Initially, Coinbase aimed to build a social-focused application incorporating messaging, artificial intelligence, and creator monetization features. However, after social tools failed to attract expected user engagement, leadership shifted focus. Jesse Pollak from Base stated that prediction markets, perpetuals, and stablecoins have emerged as primary drivers of user activity, prompting the platform to prioritize trading, payments, and artificial intelligence.
Expanding Tradable Assets
The addition of Hyperliquid perpetual futures aligns with Base's renewed emphasis on trading, joining prediction markets and stablecoins on the app. Eligible users gain exposure to a broader range of asset classes beyond standard cryptocurrencies, including commodities and tokenized stocks, all within a single self-custody environment.
