Coinbase Derivatives suspended futures and perpetual futures trading on October 24, 2026, for a scheduled maintenance window expected to last up to nine hours.
The pause began at 5:00 AM CT and was slated to end around 2:00 PM CT. It covered futures and perpetual futures products offered through Coinbase Financial Markets, the regulated entity behind Coinbase’s derivatives business.
Trading access limited during window
Account logins and balances remained accessible, but traders could not place new trades or change existing orders. Coinbase directed users to its status page for updates during the pause.
Quarterly upkeep and disaster recovery test
The longer window served two purposes: it was part of Coinbase Derivatives’ quarterly maintenance cycle and coincided with the company’s participation in the Futures Industry Association’s Annual Disaster Recovery Test. The test is designed to check whether backup systems can take over if primary systems fail.
The October pause was roughly three times longer than a comparable maintenance event in January 2026, which lasted about three hours.
No significant price swings or liquidity crunches were observed while trading was suspended, according to the research findings.
Move toward 24×7 trading
Coinbase Derivatives is moving certain products to a true 24×7 trading model and phasing out daily weekday closures. Scheduled maintenance windows will remain in place.
For traders, the event highlights the need to plan around recurring quarterly windows, especially when holding leveraged positions that cannot be adjusted or closed during a pause. For Coinbase, participation in the industry-wide disaster recovery test signals that its derivatives business is operating to standards expected of regulated futures venues, according to the research findings. The findings add that transparency and predictability could support user trust, while the shift to 24×7 trading may improve user experience and could potentially lead to higher trading volumes and better liquidity in the long run.
