Coinbase has introduced fixed-rate loans powered by the Morpho protocol, allowing users to borrow USDC stablecoins against Bitcoin collateral while locking in both the interest rate and repayment date from the start.
The product represents a departure from the variable-rate lending model that has dominated decentralized finance, where borrowing costs fluctuate with market conditions. With fixed rates, borrowers gain certainty over loan costs and duration.
First Major Deployment of Morpho Midnight
This launch marks the first enterprise-scale deployment of Morpho Midnight, a newer version of the protocol designed to support fixed rates and defined maturities. Coinbase controls the user interface, Morpho provides the underlying credit infrastructure, and Coinbase's Base blockchain network handles settlement.
The fixed-rate option complements Coinbase's existing variable-rate loans, also powered by Morpho. Coinbase first launched Bitcoin-backed borrowing on Base in early 2025.
Growing Lending Activity
Coinbase's lending business through Morpho has expanded significantly, with active loans now exceeding $1.4 billion backed by approximately $3 billion in collateral. Since launch, Coinbase has expanded the collateral types accepted beyond Bitcoin to include XRP and Dogecoin, and has adjusted servicing costs for U.S. borrowers.
Risk Considerations
The lending business has experienced volatility. A sharp decline in Bitcoin and Ethereum prices in February triggered record liquidations across Coinbase's loan book, highlighting the risks associated with borrowing against volatile assets.
Broader Implications
Fixed rates and defined repayment dates are foundational to traditional credit markets. Bringing these features to a platform of Coinbase's scale represents a notable development for on-chain lending. Morpho indicated the integration demonstrates how financial technology companies can build sophisticated credit products on open infrastructure.
While the fixed-rate product currently begins with Bitcoin, Morpho stated the protocol is designed to eventually support tokenized stocks and other real-world assets.
