Coinbase Rebrands Base App Back to Coinbase Wallet, Pivots Away From Social Network

Coinbase is rebranding its self-custodial application back to Coinbase Wallet, ending a 14-month experiment with the Base App identity. The move represents a strategic shift away from social features toward multichain trading and decentralized finance products.

The company introduced the Base App in July 2025 as a Farcaster-powered social platform featuring encrypted chat, AI agents, USDC payments, and in-feed trading. Coinbase positioned the application as an "everything app" designed to attract millions of retail users into a new kind of social network.

Leadership reconsidered the social strategy early in 2026. In March, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that the social experiment "didn't quite work" and indicated the app was already shifting toward trading functionality. In July, Base creator Jesse Pollak handed leadership to Jordan "Cobie" Fish and acknowledged that social and creator features had underperformed.

New Direction and Features

Ryan Kass, head of Coinbase Wallet product, explained that the Coinbase Wallet name better reflects the application's role as "Coinbase's self-custodial front door to the 'everything exchange.'" He described the Base App as "an opinionated experiment" while the wallet provides users access to onchain finance across multiple networks.

The wallet now supports more than 10 networks including Base, Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Robinhood Chain, and Monad. The platform offers perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid, prediction markets, tokenized stocks, and long-tail assets.

Users can follow other traders to gain additional alpha, with all trades settling onchain. The application operates without KYC requirements, allowing users to download and trade within minutes, though some features remain subject to geographic restrictions.

Base Network Integration

Base remains integrated within the wallet ecosystem. According to Kass, Base assets will naturally appear in the application as they trend. Assets show up by default once minted on a supported chain, while the wallet filters scam tokens and subjects new asset classes to product and compliance reviews.

Coinbase Wallet functions as a "test kitchen" for products and assets that may not appear on its centralized exchange, with Hyperliquid-powered perpetuals serving as the first example. The wallet is marketed on features of "no KYC, no waiting, and no borders."
