Coinbase has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC, its own US-based derivatives clearing organization. The registration became effective on Monday.
The newly approved clearinghouse is permitted to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps. However, the registration does not allow the clearinghouse to clear leveraged products.
Molly Abraham, Coinbase’s general counsel, stated that the CFTC approval completes the company's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure. Abraham noted that the development enables Coinbase to bring more regulated derivatives products to market utilizing native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.
This approval provides Coinbase with direct control over another key component of its derivatives operations. It joins the company's existing futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and its exchange, Coinbase Derivatives LLC, marking a further step in Coinbase's expansion into a financial market infrastructure provider.
A derivatives clearing organization acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers in derivatives trades, helping to manage settlement and counterparty risk in the event of a default. Coinbase's derivatives exchange lists US-regulated futures tied to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether, as well as commodity and equity-index futures, alongside long-dated perpetual-style crypto futures.
Coinbase's move follows similar actions by other cryptocurrency companies seeking to bring US derivatives infrastructure in-house. Notably, Kraken parent company Payward completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in May, which included a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse, and futures brokerage.
