Coinbase shares experienced a significant upward movement following regulatory authorization from Abu Dhabi authorities for the cryptocurrency exchange's international tokenized securities platform. COIN finished a trading session 9.55% higher at $160.20 and subsequently gained an additional 8.28% to reach $173.47 during pre-market hours. This regulatory milestone reinforces the company's strategic push into regulated blockchain securities and institutional-grade financial offerings.

Regulatory Authorization in Abu Dhabi

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Abu Dhabi Global Market issued Coinbase Financial Services permission to operate its tokenization platform. The regulatory license permits Coinbase to facilitate investment transactions and deliver custody solutions for tokenized securities. These digital assets are backed by traditional shares and function within the supervised financial ecosystem of the Abu Dhabi Global Market.

Qualified participants obtain economic benefits tied to their security holdings via the platform, though certain ownership privileges, such as voting capabilities, vary based on the terms of each digital security offering. Coinbase also implements sanctions compliance checks for transfers executed through compatible blockchain wallets. The framework allows participants to maintain tokenized securities positions without establishing traditional brokerage relationships while minimizing dependence on correspondent banking channels.

Project Diamond Infrastructure

Coinbase constructed its Abu Dhabi tokenization approach through Project Diamond prior to obtaining this regulatory clearance. The infrastructure originally concentrated on creating blockchain-enabled debt products for authorized institutional investors and subsequently issued a short-duration USDC-denominated discount note utilizing Coinbase's Base blockchain technology.

Project Diamond later enhanced its capabilities through integration with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, introducing multi-chain functionality and data authentication mechanisms. This new authorization extends the framework beyond digital debt instruments to encompass securities supported by corporate equity.

UAE Market Expansion

Coinbase joins a tokenized securities landscape in Abu Dhabi that already features multiple regulated financial institutions, such as Ondo Finance, which obtained authorization for tokenized U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds, and BNY, which introduced custody offerings through an affiliated partnership. Coinbase has independently rolled out tokenized equity products connected to corporations including Nvidia, Google, Strategy, and SpaceX.

The firm intends to divide its United Arab Emirates functions between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Abu Dhabi housing tokenized securities initiatives and Dubai facilitating the international derivatives business.
