Coinbase will rebrand its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet on September 8, reversing a strategy shift announced roughly 14 months earlier that had repositioned the product as a social-first "everything app."
The rebrand reflects a strategic pivot toward multichain asset trading. According to Ryan Kass, head of product for Coinbase Wallet, the wallet will function as a platform where users can "access any asset, regardless of what chain it's on." Recent additions include perpetual futures trading on Hyperliquid, support for Solana, and tokenized stocks across multiple blockchains.
Coinbase describes the returning Coinbase Wallet as its "test kitchen," a space to introduce assets and experiences beyond those available on Coinbase's main exchange. Kass noted that successful launches on Coinbase Wallet often move to the broader Coinbase retail platform.
The shift away from social features comes after Base creator Jesse Pollak stepped back from leading the app in July to focus on Base blockchain development. Pollak acknowledged that the social and creator coin strategy had not achieved expected adoption levels.
Despite the rebrand, Coinbase said it remains committed to Base as a blockchain network. Kass noted that both Base Chain and competing networks like Robinhood Chain serve different user needs, with Base offering speed and low fees while Robinhood Chain currently sees high user activity. "We believe that this stuff is cyclical," Kass said, suggesting demand may shift between networks over time.
