CoinEx Shuts Down After 9 Years as Trading Concentrates at Largest Exchanges

Cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx announced on September 15 that it will cease operations after nine years, citing declining revenue and mounting compliance expenses as the primary reasons for shutting down. The platform will halt spot trading on September 29 and close all withdrawals by December 22.

Founder Haipo Yang stated that CoinEx had failed to achieve status as a leading industry exchange, leaving the company unable to justify the security and compliance obligations against its generated revenue. "Carrying unlimited risk for limited revenue is no longer a rational choice," Yang said in a statement.

CoinEx identified a prolonged contraction in crypto trading volume and liquidity, combined with rising regulatory requirements across major jurisdictions, as contributing factors. The exchange had already withdrawn from the United States market in 2023 after settling a case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The agreement required CoinEx to refund more than $1.1 million to 4,691 New York investors and pay over $600,000 in penalties after being accused of operating without proper registration as a securities and commodities broker-dealer.

Broader Trend of Exchange Consolidation

CoinEx's closure joins recent exits from other established exchanges. BitMEX announced it will terminate exchange services on September 23 after more than 11 years of operation. AscendEX ceased normal operations on July 1, citing implementation of the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework alongside financial pressures, and has since been preparing for a possible formal insolvency process.

These departures are removing long-running venues from a market where trading activity is simultaneously recovering and becoming increasingly concentrated among the largest operators.

Trading Volume Concentrates at Top Platforms

Eleven major centralized exchanges tracked by CoinMarketCap handled $4.23 trillion in combined spot and derivatives volume during August, up 12.3% from July as crypto prices recovered. However, the gains have not loosened the largest venues' grip on market activity.

Binance, OKX, MEXC, Bybit, and Gate accounted for approximately 88% of all trading across the tracked cohort, with Binance alone capturing 43.3% market share for a third consecutive month. Binance processed about $1.83 trillion during August, nearly three times the $681.3 billion recorded by second-ranked OKX. MEXC followed with $469.5 billion, Bybit with $410.3 billion, and Gate with $314.7 billion.

This concentration creates a challenging environment for mid-tier exchanges. Compliance staffing, licensing, transaction monitoring, custody systems, and cybersecurity remain substantial obligations regardless of trading volume, making profitability difficult for platforms without the scale of major exchanges.

Customer Assets and Transition Timeline

At the time of the shutdown announcement, approximately $253.6 million in assets were linked to CoinEx-labeled wallets, with Bitcoin accounting for roughly $134.4 million of that total. CoinEx has stated that customer assets remain fully backed and has urged users to withdraw early to avoid potential congestion as the December 22 deadline approaches.

Spot trading will cease on September 29, after which remaining traders, market makers, and token projects will need to relocate to alternative venues, further redistributing crypto liquidity into a market already dominated by five major platforms.
