Cross River Bank Adds Ripple's RLUSD Stablecoin to Payment System

Cross River Bank announced on October 15 that it is integrating Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin into its Core Operating System, which processes payments for fintech customers. The integration includes support for the XRP Ledger, where transactions are designed to settle in approximately three to five seconds.

RLUSD, or Ripple USD, is a stablecoin designed to maintain a steady value pegged to the US dollar. Cross River said the stablecoin will be available as an additional settlement option alongside conventional payment rails that fintech businesses already use.

Integration and Banking Infrastructure

Cross River is a US bank that provides financial infrastructure to other businesses, particularly fintech companies that depend on the bank to handle payments. The bank framed the RLUSD integration as part of a broader effort to offer customers access to multiple payment methods through a single integration.

Fintech customers connecting through Cross River will be able to use stablecoin rails next to existing systems including ACH transfers, wire transfers, and other bank payment services. The bank and Ripple did not describe the arrangement as a replacement for current payment networks or suggest that existing systems would be phased out.

Settlement Speed and Practical Considerations

The XRP Ledger is a public blockchain network where transactions are designed to settle quickly and inexpensively, with each transaction costing a fraction of a cent. Ripple has cited potential use cases for RLUSD including cross-border payments, merchant settlement, and treasury transfers.

However, blockchain settlement speed does not necessarily reflect total delivery time for funds. Compliance reviews, currency conversion, and off-ramp processes—moving funds back into a bank account—can add significant time before money reaches the final recipient.

Actual adoption of RLUSD through Cross River's platform will depend on which fintech customers choose to incorporate it into their operations.
