The Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) and Blockchain Association (BA) filed with the Circuit Court of Sangamon County requesting an expedited schedule for summary judgment on Illinois's digital asset tax law. The organizations are seeking to have the court address the tax's legal validity as quickly as possible, with a potential decision by March.
The 0.2% digital asset tax was set to take effect January 1, 2027, but Illinois officials agreed earlier this month to delay implementation for six months until July 1, 2027. The pause came after the Digital Chamber raised concerns that the tax had been "slipped into the state's budget" without public debate or feedback.
CCI CEO Ji Kim stated that while the six-month pause "protects Illinois consumers and businesses from this onerous and legally flawed tax," expedited court proceedings remain necessary. The filing combines lawsuits filed separately by the CCI and BA with one filed by the Digital Chamber and Illinois Blockchain Association.
Digital Chamber CEO Cody Carbone previously indicated the organization intends to continue legal proceedings "until this tax is struck down for good."
Leadership transition at Blockchain Association: Summer Mersinger is scheduled to step down as CEO of the Blockchain Association on Friday as part of a leadership transition. Kristin Smith, the organization's former CEO, will serve as interim head, with Mersinger remaining in a role through the end of 2026.
