Crypto ETF Inflows Hit $1.61 Billion Amid 30-Year US Treasury Yield Spike

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have experienced four consecutive sessions of net inflows, reviving a regulated demand channel just as the U.S. Treasury offered investors a higher real yield on long-term debt. According to data from Farside Investors, the ETF complex drew $1.61 billion from August 17 through August 20.

Daily net inflows were recorded at $297.5 million on August 17, $189.3 million on August 18, $517.2 million on August 19, and $606.3 million on August 20, with BlackRock's IBIT contributing $503 million on the final day of the sequence. Fund reports reflect the strength of the demand channel rather than the precise timing or venue of underlying Bitcoin purchases.

Treasury Yields and Competing Benchmarks

Parallel to the ETF inflows, the U.S. Treasury's February 2056 TIPS reopening on August 20 cleared at a high real yield of 2.973%. This marked a 50 basis point increase compared to the same security's original-issue yield of 2.473% in February. Auction participation remained solid, with the bid-to-cover ratio improving to 2.82 from 2.75, and indirect bidders securing 84.4% of accepted competitive awards.

As Bitcoin traded near $77,821, market participants looked ahead to upcoming supply tests. The official auction calendar schedules $183 billion in gross note issuance between August 25 and August 27, comprising:

  • $69 billion of two-year notes on August 25
  • $70 billion of five-year notes on August 26
  • $44 billion of seven-year notes on August 27

All three auctions are scheduled to settle on August 31. Additionally, the Treasury's buyback schedule included maximum $4 billion operations for 3- to 5-year coupons on August 20 and 5- to 7-year coupons on August 25.

Market Outlook

Analysts note that the durability of the recent crypto rally will face a test against elevated sovereign yields. If Bitcoin and reported ETF inflows remain firm through the late-August auctions while long real yields hold near 2.97%, it would indicate that regulated crypto demand can absorb fresh government supply. Conversely, if inflows fade while real yields remain elevated, the rally may prove more vulnerable to bond-market competition.
