Crypto Industry Backs Candidates Across Both Parties to Shape Legislation

The crypto industry is strategically supporting candidates from both major parties to shape financial regulation. Fairshake, a federal Super PAC, is backing 32 House candidates—19 Republicans and 13 Democrats—with six candidates slated to receive $1 million each in disclosed support.

The Super PAC's approach ensures that crypto policy remains on the agenda regardless of which party controls Congress. By investing almost equally in Democratic and Republican candidates, the industry positions itself to influence financial legislation from multiple angles.

Strategic Candidate Selection

The Republican recipients include Representatives French Hill, Bryan Steil, and Bill Huizenga—all with significant roles in financial oversight. Hill chairs the House Financial Services Committee, Steil chairs its digital-assets subcommittee, and Huizenga serves as the full committee's vice chair.

The three Democratic recipients are Janelle Bynum, Steven Horsford, and Derek Tran. This selection rewards Democrats who voted for the CLARITY Act, which passed the House in July 2025 by 294–134, with 216 Republicans and 78 Democrats voting in favor.

Why Crypto Supports Both Sides

Supporting both parties reflects a pragmatic approach to an uncertain political landscape. The crypto industry seeks clarity on regulatory jurisdiction, licensing requirements, software obligations, and disclosure rules—issues that both parties generally agree need legislative attention, though they disagree on specifics.

The wording of proposed legislation matters considerably, as each provision assigns costs, permissions, and consequences to different stakeholders. Disputes over ethics provisions, for example, have complicated negotiations on crypto bills.

The Broader Political Calculus

Issue-based political spending allows industries to build relationships across party lines with lawmakers focused on specific regulatory outcomes. Voters typically elect representatives based on broad governance philosophies, while industries prioritize narrow legislative goals.

Fairshake operates as an independent expenditure-only committee, meaning it finances political activity outside candidates' campaigns under rules prohibiting direct coordination. Support for a candidate does not constitute a direct cash transfer but rather independent advertising and campaign assistance.

The industry's dual-party strategy allows flexibility in messaging: Republicans can frame crypto support as economic freedom, while Democrats can emphasize consumer protection and regulatory tightening. Ultimately, the crypto industry's election spending will be measured by the legislative outcomes it produces when Congress addresses financial regulation.
