Cryptocurrency market capitalization expanded 39.6% during the third quarter of 2026, reaching approximately $2.96 trillion from $2.1 trillion at the end of Q2, according to data from CoinGecko's quarterly report. The recovery in valuations, however, occurred alongside weaker trading activity at major spot exchanges and a substantial increase in derivatives positioning.
Quarterly turnover at CoinGecko's top-10 spot exchanges totaled $1.65 trillion, down 14.2% from $1.93 trillion in the second quarter. The same group of exchanges averaged $94.8 billion in daily volume during September, compared with $57.7 billion in July, though the full-quarter average of $73.3 billion still represented an 8.6% decline from Q2.
Dollar open interest at the top-10 perpetual exchanges rose 40.6% over the quarter and closed above $100 billion in September. Binance's share of tracked spot market volume increased from 38.7% in Q2 to 42.7% in Q3 as overall cohort turnover contracted, while KuCoin and Deribit posted declines in perpetual open interest despite the group's aggregate increase.
CoinGecko's analysis notes that the rise in dollar-denominated open interest reflects both the quantity of outstanding contracts and their valuation. The reported increase in perpetual positioning does not independently establish fresh capital inflows or changes in traders' leverage ratios, as rising asset prices can inflate the dollar value of open contracts without corresponding increases in coin quantities or trader positions. The $100 billion figure represents exposure remaining at quarter's end, distinct from the $1.65 trillion quarterly turnover, which covers three months of trading activity across spot markets.
