The crypto market declined as Bitcoin retreated from resistance and leveraged liquidations pressured major tokens. Total market capitalization fell about 1.8% to $2.88 trillion over a 24-hour period, with Ethereum and XRP extending their daily losses.
Bitcoin traded near $84,627, marking a 2.14% drop to approximately $2,684, while XRP lost 3.65% to $1.48. Bitcoin had briefly cleared $87,000 before reversing, leaving the initial market rebound unable to hold and highlighting resistance around the $87,000 level. Solana and Dogecoin also recorded declines.
Weak US Employment Data and Federal Reserve Expectations
The market pullback followed a brief rally prompted by weak US employment data. US employers added 29,000 jobs in September, falling short of the 90,000 forecast, while the unemployment rate increased to 4.2% from 4.1%. Revisions also reduced July and August employment totals by 60,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% monthly, bringing annual wage growth to 3.0%.
Market pricing placed an October rate hike at 17%, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve could pause. Although Bitcoin initially advanced following the employment release, the improvement failed to sustain a broader market rally.
Leveraged Liquidations Deepen Losses
CoinGlass figures indicated $433.57 million in liquidations over 24 hours. Long positions accounted for $321.77 million, or about 74% of the total, while short liquidations totaled $111.80 million. Liquidations occur when losses reduce an account's collateral below its leveraged position, leading exchanges to forcibly close positions and potentially intensifying market declines.
ETF Outflows Impact Bitcoin and Ethereum Funds
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $149 million in net outflows, ending a nine-day inflow streak. None of the 12 tracked Bitcoin funds registered net inflows during that session. Simultaneously, US Ethereum spot ETFs recorded $59.58 million in net outflows, with zero tracked funds posting inflows, bringing combined withdrawals to approximately $208.58 million. Despite these withdrawals, September totals showed Bitcoin funds attracted $2.65 billion and Ethereum ETFs received $832.43 million for the full month.
