Crypto Market Drops Below $2.4T as Fresh Inflation Data Stokes Rate Concerns

The cryptocurrency market faced downward pressure on October 15, with the aggregate value of crypto assets excluding stablecoins slipping below $2.4 trillion. The decline coincided with the release of fresh U.S. producer-price data that heightened inflation concerns among investors.

The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics reported that producers paid 1.3% more for their expenses in September, representing the largest monthly increase since March 2022. This followed an increase of 0.5% in August. Over the past 12 months, prices have risen 6.3%.

Energy prices contributed significantly to the increase, with gasoline rising 20.3%. The price of services increased 0.8%. Even excluding food, energy, and trade services, prices rose 0.5% during the month, indicating pressure across broader categories.

The producer-price report adds to existing inflation concerns. Earlier in the week, the consumer-price report showed annual inflation rising to 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August.

Interest Rates and Risk Appetite

For cryptocurrency investors, rising inflation complicates expectations for lower interest rates. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate to between 3.75% and 4% in September. Higher rates increase borrowing costs and make interest-paying investments more attractive relative to risk assets like bitcoin, potentially dampening investor appetite for cryptocurrencies.

Market Technical Levels

At the time of reporting, crypto's combined value excluding stablecoins was near $2.39 trillion, down 1.94% for the daily session. The market slipped below its 50-day average near the $2.42 trillion level. Analysts noted that reclaiming this level would represent the first recovery area for buyers, though the recent downtrend may present challenges. If weakness continues, the $2.30 trillion level could draw attention, as the market has previously traded around that mark.
