Crypto Market Records 22% Surge in Biggest Weekly Gain in Over Two Years

The cryptocurrency market experienced a volatile week, with total market capitalization gaining 22% over the seven days ending August 22-23. The performance marked the strongest weekly gain for the sector in over two years, though it was accompanied by a flash crash that vaporized $108 billion in minutes and triggered approximately $5 billion in liquidations.

Catalysts Behind the Rally

Two primary catalysts drove the upward movement. A Treasury buyback announcement provided a significant liquidity signal to the market, while optimism surrounding the Clarity Act—a regulatory framework moving through Washington—boosted sentiment following months of waiting for policy direction.

Short sellers amplified the move as a wave of short-covering forced traders betting against the market to close their positions. Bitcoin closed the week near $77,000 to $78,000 after reaching intraday highs around $79,000 to $80,000, achieving its best weekly gain since March 2024.

Altcoin Performance and Broad Market Breadth

Altcoins posted even stronger gains than Bitcoin, signaling breadth across the market. Ethereum rose approximately 27%, while XRP posted gains between 46% and 51% for the week. The strong performance in assets like XRP reflected increased capital allocation amid a shifting policy environment.

Flash Crash and Liquidation Event

On August 22, the market experienced a sudden drop that erased roughly $108 billion in total market capitalization within minutes. During the first hour of the crash, over $500 million in long positions were liquidated. Over the following 24 hours, liquidations climbed to between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion, with total liquidations across the broader episode approaching $5 billion.

Despite the rapid downturn and subsequent recovery, total crypto market capitalization oscillated between $2.5 trillion and $2.74 trillion throughout the week. Analysts noted that the episode highlighted the risks of high leverage and thin liquidity conditions.
