Crypto Markets Decline Amid Stronger U.S. Dollar and Macroeconomic Uncertainty

Cryptocurrency markets have experienced a sharp decline, driven by a combination of macroeconomic factors, a strengthening U.S. dollar, and extensive liquidations across digital asset platforms.

Investors have been adjusting their portfolios ahead of the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report scheduled for October 14, following an August report showing a year-over-year CPI rise of 3.4% and a 0.4% monthly inflation jump. Persistent inflation previously led the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by 0.25% in September, making the upcoming inflation data critical for the central bank's rate decision at the October 28 FOMC meeting.

Beyond cautious positioning ahead of the CPI release, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) broke above 102 following five consecutive weeks of gains, putting the dollar on track for its best week since early March 2025. A rising dollar typically creates a negative environment for risk assets as capital shifts toward safer options like bonds, which in turn impacts the pricing of assets such as Bitcoin and altcoins.

At the same time, market expectations for additional rate hikes have fallen to 19% from 42% over the course of a month, while the likelihood of no rate change has risen to 80% from 51%.

According to CoinGlass data, the broader crypto market recorded over $800 million in liquidations over a 24-hour period, with more than $600 million coming from long positions betting on higher prices. As the total crypto market capitalization tests the $2.7 trillion support level, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index has plunged to 57, marking a drop of nearly 20% and reflecting fading market confidence.

With the market struggling to absorb ongoing selling pressure amid a strengthening U.S. dollar and deleveraging, the upcoming CPI report is positioned as a critical factor in determining the near-term outlook for risk assets.
