Bitcoin rallied from roughly $64,000 in late July to briefly above $80,000 by August 25–26, driven by a short squeeze, steady ETF inflows, and hints of Treasury bond buybacks. Despite this shared tailwind across the sector, cryptocurrency stocks diverged sharply, with individual company performance determined primarily by earnings results announced in early August.
Earnings Beat, Stock Soars
Bullish delivered the strongest performance, gaining 46% after posting a 62% year-over-year revenue increase and beating EBITDA estimates by a wide margin. The company also launched a new tokenized share-trading platform on its exchange, adding a second growth narrative.
Metaplanet, Circle, and BitGo each advanced close to 36%. Metaplanet reported 134% revenue growth and disclosed a fresh BlackRock stake in its shares, while also seeding a Bitcoin treasury vehicle called Superplanet with 2,100 BTC. Circle benefited from broader stablecoin and infrastructure demand. BitGo's gain reflected a technical recovery after months of pressure, following a 79.6% year-over-year revenue beat that sparked aggressive short covering.
Misses Overpower Market Momentum
Companies reporting disappointing results fell despite Bitcoin's rally extending through late August, demonstrating that investors prioritized company-specific performance over sector-wide momentum.
Cipher Mining dropped 33%, the steepest decline tracked, after revenue fell 43% year-over-year to $24.8 million, missing the $32 million forecast by a significant margin. A new New York moratorium on hyperscale data centers added regulatory headwinds to its AI expansion efforts.
Hut 8 fell 27% after reporting a $177 million net loss tied to unrealized asset losses, despite an 81% year-over-year revenue increase. Investors focused on AI data-center execution risks rather than the revenue gains. Core Scientific slid 24% following the earlier collapse of its CoreWeave merger, with a $1.16 billion quarterly loss overshadowing a new AMD data-center partnership. CleanSpark dropped roughly 20% after an August 6 earnings miss and concerns about funding for its $6.6 billion Georgia AI data-center lease.
Bitmine bucked the downward trend, gaining 32% on its Ethereum-treasury buildout and staking income story.
