Crypto Trading Becomes Fragmented Across Chains and Venues

The decentralized exchange market has grown dramatically, with trading volume reaching a record $4.7 trillion in 2025, representing roughly 9,260x growth from 2019. However, this expansion has created a fragmented landscape where liquidity is distributed across multiple blockchains, protocols, and execution venues rather than concentrated in a single dominant market.

According to SwapSpace's State of Crypto Swaps 2026 report, over 90% of the platform's users interacted with more than one blockchain network in 2026. This multichain activity has become routine rather than exceptional, with the share of such users ranging from 72.50% to 93.66% between 2022 and 2026.

Shifting Leadership Across Networks

Liquidity leadership has shifted significantly over the past five years. In 2021, Ethereum accounted for 46.2% of global DEX volume and BNB Chain represented 39.6%. By 2025, Ethereum's share had fallen to 19.3%, BNB Chain to 15.3%, while Solana captured 33.3% and other chains collectively represented 32.1%.

SwapSpace's internal data shows similar fluidity, with Ethereum leading from 2020 through 2024, Solana moving into first place in 2025, and BNB Chain leading in 2026.

Fragmentation Within Blockchains

Multichain activity represents only one layer of fragmentation. DeFiLlama tracks approximately 1,950 protocols on Ethereum, more than 1,200 on BNB Chain, and more than 1,000 each on Arbitrum and Base. These protocols contain different pools, assets, and execution mechanisms, meaning users on a single blockchain may access multiple liquidity sources.

This creates two distinct layers of complexity: liquidity distributed between blockchain ecosystems and again between protocols and pools within individual chains.

Hybrid Market Structure

DEX growth has not displaced centralized exchanges. Instead, traders now move between decentralized and centralized venues based on liquidity, asset availability, transaction size, and market conditions. Centralized exchanges continue to handle most spot trading, while DEXs are gaining ground in perpetual futures.

Price Remains Central, But Not Alone

Survey respondents valued multiple factors when evaluating swaps. An estimated 61.86% prioritized best rate, 52.51% valued multichain access, and 39.91% sought support for rare tokens. Preferences varied by user segment: crypto-native power users prioritized multichain access at 97% alongside best rate at 91%, while traders and business users emphasized best rate at 88%.

Among users completing multiple swaps, 70% selected a different liquidity provider for their next transaction, suggesting that optimal execution conditions are transaction-specific rather than permanent properties of any single venue.

Diverse Use Cases

Crypto swaps serve multiple purposes beyond trading. Survey respondents identified receiving funds and personal payments as the most common use cases, followed by short-term and long-term trading. When asked about desired platform capabilities, payments for goods and services ranked highest, followed by cashback and automatic swaps.

Intent-Based Execution as a Response

One emerging solution to this fragmented environment is intent-based execution, where users specify their desired outcome rather than selecting specific exchanges or routes. Platforms including UniswapX, 1inch Fusion, and NEAR Intents employ versions of this model, moving routing complexity behind the user interface while maintaining access to distributed liquidity.
