Curve Finance has gone live on Stellar mainnet, marking its first native deployment outside the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem. The decentralized exchange announced the deployment in collaboration with the Stellar Development Foundation on Thursday.
The launch brings Curve's StableSwap exchange to Stellar with its core features intact. Users on the network can now create permissionless pools, browse existing pools, swap assets, and supply liquidity without requiring approval from any intermediary.
What StableSwap Does
StableSwap is Curve's signature product, designed for trading assets whose prices are expected to move together. This includes stablecoins pegged to the same currency, wrapped Bitcoin tokens, and synthetic versions of other crypto assets. The exchange is built around the expectation that two dollar-pegged tokens should trade close to one-for-one.
Deploying on Stellar required building a native version rather than adapting existing code. Unlike other blockchains compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Stellar operates as a fundamentally different environment.
Current Market Context
At the time of announcement, Curve's total value locked stood at approximately $1.27 billion. Stellar's stablecoin market capitalization was approximately $394 million, with USDC accounting for most of that figure.
No on-chain activity or trading volume data for the new Stellar pools have been disclosed. The protocol has not published early metrics on whether liquidity providers are adopting the new pools.
Plans for Expansion
Curve plans to bring its FXSwap product to Stellar once audits are complete. FXSwap targets a broader set of asset classes, including foreign exchange and real-world assets, though this plan remains contingent on the audit process.
Why Stellar Fits This Strategy
Stellar's infrastructure focuses on stablecoin issuance and settlement, making it a natural fit for a protocol specializing in swaps between tightly pegged assets. For Stellar users, the deployment provides a dedicated venue for low-slippage swaps between pegged assets and an opportunity to earn through liquidity provision.
Stellar's stablecoin market is heavily concentrated in a single asset. StableSwap functions more effectively when multiple closely linked assets are available to trade between, meaning the protocol's utility could grow as more pegged tokens arrive on the network.
The permissionless design encourages experimentation by allowing anyone to create a pool, though users must evaluate which pools and assets warrant their capital.
