Dee Goens, former chief operating officer and co-founder of Zora, has taken over as CEO following the departure of co-founder Jacob Horne. The leadership transition occurred on Wednesday, April 23.
Horne's exit marks the end of his involvement with Zora, which he helped establish over more than five years. His departure reflects a period of significant restructuring at the platform, which has reduced its workforce to fewer than 10 employees while overhauling its core product.
Token Launch and Product Evolution
On the same day as Goens' appointment, Zora launched its $ZORA token with a total supply of 10 billion. The token release coincided with the platform's shift toward what it describes as "creator coins" and "content coins"—a mechanism to tokenize individual creator profiles and content pieces into tradable on-chain assets.
The company initially launched around 2020 as a protocol for minting and trading NFTs. It raised approximately $60 million in total funding, including a $50 million Series C round in 2022 that valued the company at roughly $600 million.
Activity and Market Position
Following certain product launches, Zora reported trading volumes in the hundreds of millions and user activity reaching millions of weekly users—a significant increase from the hundreds of monthly users the platform had during its 2020 inception.
Zora's creator and content coin offerings position the platform within the emerging SocialFi category. The approach of tokenizing content itself, rather than focusing solely on creator-level tokens, represents a relatively distinct mechanic compared to other platforms in the space.
