Deutsche Bank Enters Digital Assets Custody for European Institutions

Deutsche Bank is preparing to offer digital asset custody services to institutional and corporate clients across Europe, with launch planned for later this year. The bank will hold wallets and private keys, enabling clients to safeguard and transfer Bitcoin, Ether, USD Coin, EURC, and EURAU without building their own custody infrastructure.

The custody service will operate within a banking framework with key protections including private key storage, wallet control, and transaction approval controls. The initial asset list remains limited, though tokenized financial instruments are planned for later addition. Regulatory approval is required before launch.

Demand for Regulated Custody Growing

Institutional interest in digital assets is increasingly focused on access methods rather than allocation alone. A 2026 Coinbase-EY survey of over 350 decision-makers found that 73% plan to allocate more money to digital assets. Of those surveyed, 81% preferred spot exposure through registered vehicles such as ETFs and ETPs.

While hundreds of European MiCA-authorized cryptocurrency companies exist, few major banks currently offer custodian services. Deutsche Bank's approach connects crypto custody with existing banking relationships, targeting asset managers, hedge funds, brokers, corporations, and sovereign institutions across Europe.

Stablecoins as Settlement Channel

Stablecoins could expand Deutsche Bank's custody service beyond asset storage into a recurring settlement channel. USDC currently has approximately $74 billion in circulation. EURC provides institutions with a euro-denominated option within the same framework.

This combination could support treasury transfers, business payments, and cross-border settlements. Repeated transfer activity could generate flows beyond simple token storage, with potential expansion if Deutsche Bank later adds tokenized assets for purchases, redemptions, and transfers.
