Deutsche Bank has confirmed plans to launch Bitcoin and Ethereum custody services in Germany within weeks, with expansion into Asian financial centers planned for 2027, pending regulatory clearance.
During an October 16 interview in Bangkok, Deutsche Bank's corporate banking co-head Gerald Podobnik announced the timeline. The platform will initially serve institutional and corporate customers, offering Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins including USD Coin, EUR Coin, and EUR Aura.
Service Features and Security
The custody platform will manage private keys and wallet security for clients. Security measures will include offline storage, multi-approval requirements for transactions, and hardware protection. Customers will access their digital assets through managed wallets and be able to transfer holdings.
Broader Strategic Initiative
The custody launch forms part of Deutsche Bank's broader growth strategy, which targets 8% annual corporate banking growth through 2028. Podobnik attributed expansion opportunities to increasing stablecoin adoption and growing demand for blockchain services from financial institutions.
Beyond custody, Deutsche Bank plans to enable customers to convert conventional currencies into stablecoins and back. The bank also intends to offer tokenized deposits and create an environment for blockchain-based securities such as digital bonds.
Asian Expansion and Regulatory Factors
While Deutsche Bank has outlined plans for Asian financial center expansion in 2027, the bank has not specified which markets will be prioritized. The expansion schedule depends on regulatory approvals, internal testing, and customer demand.
Podobnik emphasized that new blockchain offerings would complement traditional banking services rather than replace them, requiring financial institutions to maintain both capabilities.
