DEX Trading Volume Reaches 25% of CEX Activity in September 2026

Decentralized exchanges are capturing an increasing share of cryptocurrency spot trading volume. According to data from XWIN Japan, the DEX/CEX spot trading volume ratio reached approximately 25% in September 2026, suggesting that decentralized platforms are closing the gap with centralized exchanges.

The ratio compares total spot trading volume across decentralized platforms with volume on centralized exchanges. Several trends are cited as drivers of DEX adoption: improvements in liquidity and execution quality, enhanced user experience, the rise of perpetual DEX platforms such as Hyperliquid, and growing demand for self-custodial financial services.

Some analysts have claimed DEX market share surged over 1,100% in five years. However, XWIN Japan cautioned that this figure "depends heavily on the starting point and methodology" and should not be treated as confirmed.

Rising Token Reserves Complicate the Picture

Data from CryptoQuant shows Uniswap's UNI token exchange reserves have increased to approximately 109.3 million tokens, up sharply from 55–60 million in 2024. Rising exchange reserves typically indicate more tokens available for trading and may suggest potential selling pressure, though the analyst noted that reserves do not prove holders are preparing to sell.

The analyst emphasized an important distinction: "UNI token flows are not the same thing as Uniswap's trading activity." Exchange reserves indicate where tokens are held, while protocol activity reflects actual trades. Therefore, token reserve levels alone cannot confirm or dispute DEX growth.

Caveats on Growth Metrics

XWIN Japan highlighted that a rising DEX/CEX ratio "can reflect declining CEX volume, not just stronger DEX demand." Additionally, incentive-driven trading can inflate reported activity on decentralized platforms, potentially skewing volume metrics.

The analyst recommended monitoring absolute DEX volume, active user counts, protocol revenue, and exchange reserves as more reliable indicators. Sustainable DEX growth requires "real users and fee generation, even after incentives fade," according to the analysis. As DeFi becomes more integrated into financial infrastructure, platform adoption metrics should be distinguished from token performance metrics.
