The US Dollar Index (DXY) held around 102.2 early Monday, near the 18-month peak reached the previous week. The index climbed from roughly 98.8 in early September to above 102, surpassing its July highs near 101.6, representing a gain of nearly 2% for the month.
Market observers disagree sharply on the dollar's trajectory. Some analysts expect the advance to stall at a long-term trendline the index broke last year, viewing the move as a bearish retest. Others argue the DXY remains in an 18-year bull market that began at a record low of 70.698 on March 17, 2008, with years of gains potential ahead.
The divergence matters beyond currency markets. A stronger dollar typically pressures risk assets, particularly cryptocurrencies and altcoins. Bitcoin has historically moved inversely to the dollar, though September broke that pattern when Bitcoin gained 6.14% even as the dollar index rose nearly 2%.
Fed Rate Decision and Inflation Data Ahead
The near-term focus shifts to Wednesday's consumer price index (CPI) report, followed by producer prices and retail sales on Thursday. The data sets up the Federal Reserve's October 28 rate decision.
The Fed raised rates to a range of 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16, its first hike since July 2023. Traders have since scaled back expectations for another increase. CME FedWatch data put the odds of a hold in October at 82.8%, compared with 51% a month earlier.
Early October data showed consumer sentiment falling to 46.3 in the University of Michigan's preliminary reading, a five-month low from 48.1 in September, as living costs pressured households.
Market Conditions and Crypto Impact
Bond market volatility has tightened borrowing conditions globally, potentially prompting softer Fed messaging before the October 28 decision if inflation data comes in cool, according to analysts.
October has been challenging for digital assets, with total crypto market value falling 1.4% so far this month, attributed to higher yields, oil price spikes, and fund selling.
