A Bitcoin address that had remained dormant since May 2011 moved 20.43 BTC on September 29, worth approximately $1.7 million at current prices. The transaction ended a 15.4-year period of inactivity for the wallet.
According to onchain analysis, the original coins were acquired at $3 to $4 each, representing a gain of over 2,000,000% for the holder. The movement occurred when Bitcoin was trading near $83,000.
Origins of the Bitcoin Holdings
Between February and May 2011, the wallet received approximately 10 BTC payments from an entity identified as Braiins Mining, formerly known as Slush Pool, one of the earliest Bitcoin mining pools. Over its lifetime, the address accumulated 429.88 BTC across 43 payments, a pattern consistent with early mining pool payouts.
The two outputs that moved this week arrived on May 1, 2011 (10.1 BTC) and May 8, 2011 (10.33 BTC), both remaining untouched for over 15 years.
Historical Transaction Paths
The wallet's remaining early Bitcoin went to addresses tagged as Mt. Gox deposit addresses and, in an October 2011 transaction, to an address associated with Silk Road, the darknet marketplace. Both Mt. Gox and Silk Road were common Bitcoin destinations in 2011, with Mt. Gox serving as a primary trading venue and Silk Road accepting Bitcoin as payment.
Recent Movement Details
The owner split the held outputs into smaller amounts and sent them to modern Segwit addresses, incurring minimal transaction fees under $1. The new outputs were subsequently consolidated, with one 5.52 BTC output created from multiple addresses, indicating a single holder of the private keys and suggesting use of current wallet software. As of the transaction, none of the moved Bitcoin had touched known exchange deposit addresses.
Timing and Context
The wallet movement comes one month before Mt. Gox's October 31, 2026 creditor repayment deadline. While this wallet is not controlled by Mt. Gox's trustee, dormant coins from 2011 with Mt. Gox connections have drawn increased attention as the repayment deadline approaches.
