Drift Protocol Opens DFX Recovery Claims at 1 Cent Per Dollar Lost

Drift Protocol opened claims and redemptions for its DFX recovery token on October 1, offering victims of its April exploit access to USDT stablecoin payments from the Recovery Pool. The initial redemption rate was approximately 0.0104 USDT per DFX, based on a pool holding roughly 3.1 million USDT.

Victims received one DFX for each USDT of verified loss, meaning the launch rate represented about 1.04% of the corresponding loss amount. The redemption price adjusts based on the pool balance divided by outstanding DFX tokens at the time of each transaction.

How the Recovery Mechanism Works

DFX is a transferable token on Solana, separate from the DRIFT governance token. Drift has set a fixed allocation of 299,500,810.998 DFX, corresponding to approximately 299.5 million USDT of verified losses. The outstanding supply decreases as tokens are burned.

When holders redeem DFX for USDT, the tokens are permanently burned in the same transaction. Redeemed tokens no longer participate in future pool deposits. Holders who redeem only part of their DFX keep the remaining tokens in circulation, which continue to share in future deposits.

Alternatively, holders can sell DFX on secondary markets such as Raydium, transferring tokens to other holders rather than redeeming them against the pool. This preserves participation in future deposits, though the size and timing of those deposits remain uncertain.

Future Funding and Timeline

Drift stated that a share of net protocol revenue from the Velocity trading platform enters the recovery pool daily at 00:00 UTC, alongside any recovered stolen funds. In April, Tether committed up to 127.5 million USDT for relaunch and user recovery, plus up to 20 million USDT from strategic partners for recovery. Capital was described as being introduced progressively and aligned with platform performance.

These commitment ceilings represent funding caps rather than cash immediately available for redemption. The recovery framework included a revenue-linked credit facility, ecosystem grants, and market-maker loans designed to support a relaunch.

The DFX claim window closes January 1, 2028, at 00:00 UTC, when unclaimed DFX will be permanently burned. This deadline applies to claiming tokens rather than to completing redemptions.
