The European Central Bank (ECB) launched Pontes on Monday, a settlement system designed to process wholesale tokenized asset transactions in central bank money. The platform provides an alternative to private settlement assets such as stablecoins.
Pontes represents part of the Eurosystem's broader strategy for tokenized finance. The system will initially offer core services, with full implementation targeted for 2028.
How Tokenization Works
Tokenization converts assets into digital tokens, typically deployed on distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks. According to the ECB, this approach could accelerate wholesale transactions and improve efficiency by consolidating issuance, trading, settlement, custody and servicing on a unified platform. The system also enables automation through smart contracts.
Central Bank Stability
Piero Cipollone, an ECB Executive Board member, stated that Pontes brings central bank money's stability and trust to Europe's tokenized finance ecosystem and will provide an important advantage for scaling the sector.
Pontes builds on testing conducted by the Eurosystem in 2024, during which participants settled DLT-based transactions in central bank money. Feedback from those tests indicated that access to a risk-free settlement asset was essential for broader adoption of tokenized finance.
Related Development
The Eurosystem is concurrently developing Appia, a complementary initiative exploring an integrated ecosystem for DLT-based financial services. A blueprint for Appia is expected by 2028.
