The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced plans to invest a small portion of its reserves in euro-denominated tokenized securities, marking a direct exposure to blockchain-based financial markets. The initiative allows the central bank to test the technology firsthand, spanning from purchasing tokenized bonds to settlement and portfolio management.
Purchases will settle in central bank money through Pontes, a newly introduced Eurosystem platform designed to bridge the ECB's payment system with blockchain-based financial markets for wholesale transactions. According to the ECB, the initial investments will focus on euro-denominated securities issued by euro-area governments, regional authorities, agencies, and European supranational institutions.
Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB’s executive board, stated that Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenized finance ecosystem, providing an important advantage to help it scale.
The executive board of the central bank will determine the size, timing, and operational details of the investments after preparatory work is finished. This decision will also depend on the development of tokenized securities issuance and the broader European tokenized finance market.
Pontes represents the initial phase of the Eurosystem's strategy to integrate central bank money into tokenized finance. The ECB intends to introduce additional services and longer operating hours gradually, with full implementation of the platform targeted for 2028.
