Elon Musk's brief response to a post about quantum physics has been interpreted by some in the crypto community as validation that Bitcoin is already protected from quantum computers. However, Musk did not discuss Bitcoin or cryptocurrency in his statement.

On August 29, Musk replied to an Institute of Art and Ideas post about Oxford physicist Tim Palmer's research, stating that the universe is quantized in Planck-scale units. The comment addressed only the nature of physical reality, with no mention of private keys or blockchain security.

Investor Fred Krueger cited Musk's remark the following day, claiming it supported the idea that Bitcoin may already be quantum-safe. Krueger noted that breaking Bitcoin's signatures would require approximately 835 logical qubits using Shor's algorithm and referenced Musk's support for Palmer's research.

The Theory and Its Origins

Tim Palmer is a Royal Society fellow elected in 2003 and has spent his career developing weather forecasting models at Oxford. His paper, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in March, proposes that quantum computers face a fundamental limit based on the discrete nature of the universe.

Palmer's work argues that quantum entanglement will stall between 200 and 400 qubits on current hardware and predicts it will never exceed 1,000 qubits. This contrasts with standard quantum theory, which sets no such limit. The theory remains a minority position within physics until experimental evidence proves it correct.

The Qubit Gap

Cracking Bitcoin's cryptographic signatures requires an estimated 835 logical qubits, according to research from July. This estimate represents a reduction from earlier figures of 1,098 and 1,175 qubits.

Current quantum hardware is nowhere near these thresholds. IBM plans to develop a machine with 200 logical qubits by 2029, which would test Palmer's theoretical ceiling but would not approach the capability needed to threaten Bitcoin.

Bitcoin developers are not relying on physics alone. A post-quantum migration proposal is already in circulation, with 2029 anticipated as the year when meaningful testing of quantum capabilities against current cryptography may occur.
