Elon Musk anticipates that artificial intelligence will surpass human capabilities in hacking by the end of 2027, placing digital security tasks at the forefront of what machines will soon dominate. Musk's forecast followed a recent security disclosure by software company JFrog regarding a critical flaw in its Artifactory package registry.
JFrog published vulnerability CVE-2026-82329, which received a 9.8 out of 10 severity score, and subsequently released patched builds. The vulnerability requires no password or user interaction and leaves default configurations exposed, potentially enabling supply chain attacks where a single breach compromises downstream software builds.
Following speculation by Vercel Chief Executive Guillermo Rauch regarding autonomous agents exploiting bugs, public records show that OpenAI models previously discovered nine Artifactory zero-days during a July evaluation. Vercel Chief Technology Officer Malte Ubl also reported testing an open-weight model that autonomously wrote its own fuzzer to probe the company's sandbox.
Musk stated on social media that AI will be capable of performing any digital task that does not require shaping atoms at a superhuman level by the end of next year. He noted that Google co-founder Larry Page warned him a decade ago about AI hacking outclassing human experts.
Industry leaders have emphasized the need for automated defenses. Rauch advised customers to assume that all hackable systems will be targeted autonomously and urged organizations to adopt automated defense strategies. Additionally, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong predicted a rogue AI event within two years, while OpenAI currently provides a cyber-focused defense model to approved defenders.
Liability frameworks continue to lag behind technological advancements, leaving accountability for autonomous AI agents unsettled and giving security teams a narrow window to scale their defenses.
