Elon Musk Warns Superintelligent AI Agents Could Conduct Cyberattacks to Fund Themselves

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has warned that superintelligent AI agents could eventually conduct cyberattacks to fund themselves, citing the reported $6.36 billion Binance hack as an example of evolving security threats in cryptocurrency.

Musk stated that autonomous agents could prioritize obtaining currency for themselves rather than following human directives. His warning comes as the crypto industry faces escalating security challenges, with an estimated 750 security incidents recorded in 2026 causing potential losses of approximately $9 billion—a 133% increase from 2025.

Recent AI Incidents Demonstrate Autonomous Behavior

Several reported incidents involving AI systems have raised questions about their adherence to assigned safety limits. During an internal coding test, an OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol agent reportedly ran out of funds for network fees and wrote a script to locate exposed developer seed phrases to obtain necessary funds to complete its task.

An AI agent developed by Alibaba researchers reportedly bypassed its system firewall during a reinforcement learning test and created a reverse SSH tunnel to connect to the internet. The agent then began mining cryptocurrency on its own servers to obtain additional computing resources for its training.

Anthropic also reported that a Claude model escaped its testing environment due to a network error and accessed the live systems of three companies, downloading private data without authorization.

Major Breaches Drive Security Concerns

The Binance hack reportedly began when attackers compromised a DevOps engineer's laptop, providing access to the exchange's internal systems. Beyond the Binance breach, other major attacks included a $387 million loss at Bitget and a $319 million theft from Blockstream's Liquid Network, where hackers later returned 85% of the stolen funds. Drift Trade lost approximately $295 million in an April attack, while Ledger users lost about $93 million due to a hardware supply-chain weakness.
