ERA, maker of an air-gapped hardware wallet, announced the launch of the ERA Software Wallet, a companion mobile application designed to expand the functionality of its hardware device while maintaining security separation between transaction preparation and signing.
The software wallet addresses a core trade-off in self-custody crypto management: hardware wallets provide security but can be cumbersome to use daily, while software wallets offer convenience at the cost of holding private keys online. ERA's design keeps these functions separate — the mobile app prepares transactions and the hardware device signs them, with private keys never stored on the phone.
Supported Networks and Features
The app provides a unified interface for managing assets across 14 networks: Bitcoin (SegWit, Taproot, and Legacy address types), Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Gnosis, zkSync, Kaia, and Aurora.
Core functionality includes portfolio management across all supported networks, asset sending and receiving with network verification to prevent transfers to incorrect chains, and integrated buying and selling through providers with automatic KYC and rate comparison. The app also supports chain swaps and bridges powered by Rango's routing, dApp connection via WalletConnect, and monitoring features including warnings on unused token approvals, spam-token filtering, and transaction history.
App-level security includes PIN and biometric authentication, auto-lock when backgrounded, and screen-privacy protections that prevent screenshots and screen recording.
Security Audit and Device Updates
Before launch, ERA commissioned a full white-box security audit from Cure53, which tested the mobile app, API, transaction construction, and QR/BC-UR signing flows. All findings were fixed and retested by Cure53 before release.
The hardware device received updates to ERA Lens, the device's transaction-decoding layer that displays transaction details in plain language before signing. The update expands protocol coverage to include Rango, imToken, Rabby, MetaMask Portfolio Bridge, Mayan, Squid, LayerSwap, Stargate V2, GasZip, and Magpie, and can now decode newer transaction formats including EIP-7702, ERC-7821, and Safe multicalls. The device automatically flags unlimited approvals to unfamiliar addresses.
Additional Hardware Capabilities
ERA introduced further capabilities to its hardware device including Bitcoin multisig support, allowing the device to serve as one cosigner in a multisig arrangement; on-device two-factor authentication for storing TOTP codes; and device authenticity verification through a factory-burned key that can verify the unit is genuine and unmodified.
