Ethena is ending its ENA token incentive program for USDe stakers, completing a phase-out that has reduced rewards by approximately 85% since 2024. The protocol will cease incentive distributions this month.
USDe, Ethena's synthetic stablecoin, expanded rapidly through generous ENA token emissions. The protocol distributed over $750 million in total rewards to users since launch, helping USDe's circulating supply reach approximately $15 billion at its peak in October 2025.
USDe's supply has since contracted by more than 65%, falling below $5 billion as of late August 2026. The reduction in discretionary ENA rewards tracked a cooling funding-rate environment, which generates yield for USDe holders through Ethena's delta-neutral strategy. As perpetual futures funding rates declined, the economics of subsidizing growth with token emissions became harder to justify.
Governance and Buyback Changes
The Ethena Foundation terminated recurring ENA investor unlocks as of October 5, 2026. A governance proposal approved in September 2026 ties future ENA buybacks directly to USDe supply milestones, with the first threshold set at $7.5 billion. If USDe's circulating supply climbs above that level, 95% of the protocol's net revenue will be channeled into buying ENA from the open market.
Path Forward
Ethena has shifted strategic priorities toward institutional credit products and white-label stablecoin offerings. Rebuilding USDe from below $5 billion to the $7.5 billion threshold needed to trigger buybacks will require organic growth in an environment where funding rates remain constrained. The buyback mechanism ties ENA purchases to USDe performance rather than continuous token emissions, making ENA holders' returns dependent on the stablecoin's ability to recapture lost ground.
