Ethena Expands USDe Yield Strategy Into Equities on Binance

Ethena officially launched its USDe yield reserve expansion into real-world asset basis trading on Binance, marking what the protocol described as the most significant update to USDe collateral backing since its launch.

The move into equity and real-world asset perpetuals targets a market opportunity of approximately $150 trillion, substantially larger than crypto's $2.5 trillion market. Ethena will execute basis trades using Binance's bStocks (tokenized spot stocks and ETFs) and USDT-denominated perpetual futures contracts on both sides of the trade.

How the Strategy Works

Basis trading involves purchasing a spot asset while simultaneously shorting its equivalent perpetual futures contract to capture the price difference and funding rate. According to Ethena, the equity basis trade on Binance has averaged 11% returns over the past six months, nearly double the returns offered by short-term U.S. Treasury bonds.

Binance was selected as the initial platform for this expansion due to its low-risk profile, strong equity perpetuals market (showing 30% monthly growth), and lower automatic deleveraging priority for delta-neutral accounts such as Ethena's.

Diversified Reserve Strategy

USDe is Ethena's flagship synthetic stablecoin that generates yield for holders. Beyond equity basis trading, Ethena deploys reserves across multiple channels including DeFi lending through Aave and Morpho, crypto basis trades, institutional lending in Bitcoin, liquid stablecoins, and real-world asset syndicated loans.

This diversification approach contrasts with traditional stablecoins like USDC and USDT, which concentrate reserves primarily in U.S. Treasury bills. While those competitors retain nearly all accrued interest, Ethena shares a portion of its yield with USDe holders.

Growing Basis Trade Contribution

Basis trading's contribution to USDe yield backing has grown substantially. During the height of crypto winter in June and July, basis trades accounted for only 1% of USDe yield backing. As of the report, this share had risen to approximately 20%, with Ethena projecting equity perpetuals could significantly drive USDe demand.

The USDe market supply currently stands at $4.8 billion. Analysts project this growth could extend to ENA, Ethena's native ecosystem and governance token.
