Ethena Labs, the team behind the synthetic dollar USDe, said on October 29, 2026, that it is aware of a potential security incident involving Binance. The company said its exchange-exposed collateral is kept with off-exchange custodians rather than held on the exchange itself.
Neither the nature nor the scope of the possible incident at Binance has been disclosed. Ethena's statement focused on where its collateral is held.
USDe functions and custody
Ethena said USDe's core functions remain unaffected, including minting, redemption and the collateral backing the token. The company works with Off-Exchange Settlement providers, known as OES, including Copper and Ceffu.
These custodians hold and manage USDe's backing assets without transferring ownership to the exchange. Under the arrangement, the exchange can see the collateral and extend trading credit against it, but it does not hold the keys.
Why Ethena uses exchanges
USDe is not backed by dollars in a bank account. It maintains its value through delta-neutral hedging, mostly using perpetual futures on centralized trading venues. Perpetual futures are derivative contracts with no expiry date, and centralized exchanges such as Binance are where much of that trading takes place.
Ethena therefore needs exchanges for hedging, but the OES setup is designed to let it do so without leaving collateral on the venues. The stated goal is that if an exchange fails, the collateral stays protected and can be accessed independently of problems at the venue.
Monthly custodian attestations and on-chain dashboards have consistently shown backing assets held in institutional custody, away from exchanges, according to the company.
Context and implications
The alert comes as Binance has been broadening its product menu, including equity perpetuals and tokenized stocks. The available material does not indicate that the potential incident is linked to those offerings.
For USDe holders, Ethena is pointing to its custody structure as a buffer. If the company's account of its setup holds, a problem at Binance should not directly affect the assets backing the token.
Ethena still relies on exchanges like Binance for hedging. Even with collateral held elsewhere, disruption at a major venue could complicate the hedging side of the operation, which is the part that keeps the peg steady. The source material does not say this has happened.
Ethena's response acknowledges the possible problem, names its safeguard and points to ongoing transparency. Whether that confidence is fully warranted depends on facts about the Binance situation that have not yet been made public. For now, Ethena says the collateral is off-exchange, the token is operating, and the incident remains, in its framing, potential.
