Guy Young, founder of Ethena Labs, attributes the growing market share of decentralized exchanges to their structural efficiency advantages over centralized platforms. Speaking on Delphi Digital's Hivemind podcast in October 2026, Young outlined three areas where DEXs outperform centralized exchanges: execution, custody, and economics.
On custody, Young highlighted a key difference in how the two models operate. Centralized exchanges hold user assets on their own books, while DEX trades settle through smart contracts, allowing users to maintain control of their funds until a swap occurs.
Young also noted that developers find DEXs appealing due to composability, permissionless innovation, and lower operating costs. Composability allows protocols to integrate with one another without requiring permission, while centralized platforms typically operate as closed systems with higher overhead from managing excess capacity and custodial obligations.
Market Data Shows Sustained DEX Growth
The shift toward on-chain trading has been measurable. In May 2025, decentralized exchanges captured 25% of global spot trading volume, representing more than $410 billion in monthly trades. Through 2026, DEX market share remained elevated, with the top 10 DEXs maintaining a trading ratio of roughly 23.5% compared to centralized exchanges in Q2 2026.
Perpetual DEX volumes showed even steeper growth, climbing from around 2% market share in early 2024 to above 10% by 2026.
Factors Driving On-Chain Activity
Several developments have fueled migration to decentralized venues. Memecoins often launch on-chain before centralized exchange listings, directing traders to DEX platforms. Improved wallet usability has lowered entry barriers, while growing interest in reducing reliance on intermediaries has also contributed to the trend.
Additional activity has come from blockchain networks including Solana, Base, and Robinhood Chain, which offer traders fast and inexpensive token swaps outside traditional order books.
Ethena's Interest in the DEX Ecosystem
Young's perspective reflects Ethena's business interests. The company's flagship product, USDe, a synthetic dollar, relies on access to deep trading venues. Ethena maintains its value through delta-neutral hedging by holding crypto assets while taking offsetting short positions, a strategy that requires both DEX and centralized exchange liquidity.
USDe supply peaked at nearly $15 billion in 2025 before declining to approximately $4.9 billion as of late September or early October 2026.
