Altcoins experienced sharper declines than Bitcoin over the past 24 hours, with market-wide pressures driving what analysts describe as "outsized drawdowns" across major tokens.
Ethereum fell 5.5% to a $289 billion market cap, while XRP dropped 5.1% to $82.4 billion and Solana slipped 3.8% to $60.6 billion. Bitcoin declined more modestly at 3.1% on the day, holding a $1.6 trillion market cap. The broader cryptocurrency market contracted 2.5% to $2.8 trillion.
The pullback reflects macroeconomic pressures, including a consumer price index reading of 3.7% for the year ending in September and expectations of an October interest rate hike. These conditions have shifted institutional participants into defensive positions.
Hedging Activity Intensifies
Nick Forster, founder of options trading exchange Derive.xyz, noted that hedging activity on his platform doubled as traders reassessed risk exposure. "This immediate pull-back from long-term upside bets alongside aggressive short-term hedging shows a dramatic regime shift," he said.
Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares, explained that altcoins face particular vulnerability during market stress. "Alts are typically more sensitive to financial conditions, and tightening affects the premise of liquidity expanding," he told Decrypt. Nolan also highlighted the U.S. dollar reaching a near 18-month high as a headwind for cryptocurrencies, which trade inversely with the dollar index.
Profit-Taking After Strong Run
Max Shannon, senior associate at Bitwise Europe, attributed part of the decline to profit-taking following altcoins' strong recent performance. Since the start of October, futures open interest in altcoins excluding Ethereum has fallen by $8 billion. Ethereum ETFs recorded 11 consecutive trading days of net outflows totaling $782.8 million, followed by further outflows of $129.5 million, as investors cashed in gains from Ethereum's three-month outperformance against Bitcoin.
Analysts differ on near-term direction. Nolan stated that he struggles to call a bottom, noting valid arguments for movements in either direction depending on whether Bitcoin maintains support levels and interest rate expectations shift.
