Ethereum's core developers advanced EIP-8141 to scheduled status for inclusion in the upcoming Hegotá network upgrade during the All Core Developers Execution call on August 27, 2026. The proposal, titled "Frame Transactions," moved from Considered for Inclusion to Scheduled for Inclusion status, signaling strong developer consensus for the change.
The Hegotá hard fork is planned for 2027, following the Glamsterdam upgrade expected in Q4 2026.
What EIP-8141 introduces
EIP-8141 proposes new transaction types with programmable features designed to integrate account abstraction directly into Ethereum's execution layer. The proposal enables atomic batching, allowing users to bundle multiple operations into a single transaction, eliminating the need for separate confirmations when approving tokens or executing swaps.
The proposal also introduces third-party gas payments, enabling applications to cover transaction fees on behalf of users. By making transaction validation programmable, EIP-8141 would create architectural flexibility for implementing signature schemes resistant to quantum computing attacks, though it would not make Ethereum quantum-proof immediately.
Moving account abstraction to protocol level
ERC-4337, which launched in early 2023, implemented account abstraction at the application layer through bundlers and an alternative transaction mempool. EIP-8141 aims to move account abstraction into Ethereum's core protocol, reducing reliance on ERC-4337 and off-chain infrastructure.
Hegotá upgrade timeline
Approximately 66 proposals are under consideration for inclusion in Hegotá, with a developer preference deadline set for September 10, 2026. The Scheduled for Inclusion designation indicates EIP-8141 has cleared initial review and gained sufficient consensus among core developers to be formally included in the upgrade plan.
