Ethereum Derivatives Show Mixed Signals as Options Bulls Outnumber Bears

Ethereum's derivatives traders face a complex technical picture as the asset traded between $2,324 and $2,575 this week. While options markets signal bullish sentiment, liquidation patterns and diverging max pain calculations across major exchanges suggest the path forward remains contested.

Futures Market Holds Steady Despite Mixed Signals

Ethereum's futures market carries $30.59 billion in open interest across 12.63 million contracts, according to Coinglass data. The 0.42% decline in aggregate open interest over 24 hours indicates modest contraction. Binance dominates with $8.73 billion in open interest, representing 28.55% of the total, followed by MEXC at $3.25 billion and CME at $3.24 billion. Hyperliquid, Bybit, and Bitget account for $2.61 billion, $2.15 billion, and $2 billion respectively.

Exchange-level activity shows divergent trends. MEXC's open interest climbed 6.49% over 24 hours while Bitget gained 1.22%, but Bitunix shed 11.27%, BingX declined 7.57%, and CME recorded a 1.11% contraction.

Liquidations Skew Heavily Toward Leveraged Longs

Liquidations delivered sharp losses to bullish traders over the past 24 hours, with 3,222 long liquidations against 2,181 short liquidations on Friday. The imbalance widened over 12 hours, recording 2,651 longs versus 876 shorts. Despite this pressure, funding rates remained positive near 0.0053, indicating that leveraged bullish positions continued paying shorts to maintain their exposure.

Options Traders Back Bulls but Exercise Caution

Ethereum options open interest totals 2.57 million ETH, split between 1.59 million in calls and 983,689 in puts. Calls command 61.75% of outstanding positions, reflecting bullish positioning. However, 24-hour trading volume nearly balanced between calls and puts, with 414,521 ETH in calls against 420,513 ETH in puts, suggesting some traders are hedging.

Deribit's largest individual position is a December 25 $3,200 call contract holding 69,667 ETH, followed by its $2,200 call with 51,016 ETH. The October 30 $2,600 call on Deribit accounts for another 38,043 ETH.

CME Options Show Reduced Exposure

CME's ethereum options market has contracted significantly. Outstanding contracts have fallen to approximately 50,000 ETH in October from earlier 2026 levels that briefly exceeded 500,000 ETH. Combined options positions dropped from readings exceeding $70 million in late 2025 to roughly $10 million in October, indicating a substantially smaller footprint on the traditional exchange despite broader derivative markets maintaining substantial exposure.

Max Pain Levels Diverge Across Exchanges

The max pain calculation—the theoretical settlement price producing the smallest payout to options holders—reveals disagreement among major exchanges. For October 30 expiration, Deribit and Binance point toward approximately $2,500, while OKX sits higher near $2,650. For December 25, Deribit drops to $2,200, OKX approaches $2,300, and Binance remains near $2,500. These differences reflect each exchange's respective options positions rather than price forecasts.

The competing signals suggest ethereum derivatives traders remain uncertain. While options positioning favors bulls and funding rates support leveraged long traders, persistent liquidations of leveraged longs and diverging max pain levels indicate the market has not yet resolved its directional bias.
