The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) initiative has achieved a technical milestone by executing an atomic Layer 1 to Layer 2 transaction on Ethereum's mainnet. Eduardo Antuña Díez, a core contributor to the project, highlighted the demonstration, stating that atomic synchronous composability has been realized on the network.
During the demonstration, the EEZ project transferred 0.001 ETH and updated a rollup within a single all-or-nothing operation. Prior to the mainnet transfer, the system underwent an audit, live blob encoding, and testing against Cow Swap and Uniswap v4. The development functions as a technical demonstration rather than a finished product or an official Ethereum protocol upgrade.
Connecting Fragmented Networks
Launched in early 2026, the EEZ initiative is backed by the Ethereum Foundation and led by groups including Gnosis and Zisk. The project aims to connect Ethereum's separate Layer 2 networks and combine fragmented capital pools into a shared ecosystem to reduce fragmentation between the main chain and its expanding network of scaling solutions.
Jakub Gregus, co-founder of the decentralized finance protocol Hydration, commented on the significance of the milestone on social media, calling it a major development for the network's technology.
Roadmap Ahead
Despite the milestone, developers note that further work remains for the project. Full two-way calls, nested cross-chain calls, and real-time proving are scheduled on the EEZ roadmap through 2027, and the publicly available core software remains in its early stages.
