Ethereum surged past the $2,200 mark on August 19, marking its first breach of this level since June 2, 2026. The digital asset posted an impressive climb within a 24-hour period, touching an intraday peak around $2,103 before settling higher, achieving an approximate 8% appreciation over the preceding day.

The upward movement coincided with a comprehensive cryptocurrency market surge that propelled Bitcoin toward the $70,000 threshold. Bitcoin rocketed past $68,000 and approached $69,700, its strongest position in over two months, as market participants scrambled to exit bearish positions.

According to data from CoinGlass, the broader market rally triggered massive forced liquidations. Approximately $1.55 billion worth of short positions were forcibly closed during a single 60-minute window, while aggregate liquidations across the ecosystem approached $2.99 billion over a 24-hour period, impacting roughly 114,038 individual traders. The most substantial individual liquidation involved a $32.18 million ETHUSDT perpetual futures contract on the Bitget exchange. Alternative cryptocurrencies including Solana, BNB, Dogecoin, and Cardano also posted gains.

Market participants also pointed to macroeconomic factors, including an announcement from the US Treasury detailing expanded long-term bond repurchase operations, which market observers interpreted as an injection of liquidity into financial markets.

Institutional interest accompanied the price action, with spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds registering $71.47 million in net positive capital inflows during the trading session. Cumulative ETF holdings climbed to $10.83 billion. Meanwhile, open interest in Ethereum derivatives contracts expanded by nearly 10% within a single day.

Technical indicators showed the Relative Strength Index for ETH reaching 87.41, indicating extreme overbought conditions, while the Chaikin Money Flow indicator hit 0.62, pointing to capital accumulation supporting the move. Ethereum's performance contributed to a 31.1% gain during Q3 2026, reversing a previous 25.3% drawdown from Q2.
