Ethereum has entered October caught between conflicting market forces following a historic third-quarter rally that generated a return of over 70%, marking the asset's best Q3 performance in history. However, as the fourth quarter begins, emerging data points to potential reversal risks.
According to data from Santiment, social sentiment surrounding Ethereum has shifted, with the sentiment meter declining to 0.89 bullish comments for every bearish comment across platforms including X, Telegram, and Reddit. This marks the lowest ratio recorded since June 7, dipping below the 1.0 threshold where bearish commentary begins to outweigh bullish discussions.
While some analysts suggest that rising pessimism and fear can sometimes act as a contrarian setup indicating that panic selling has already occurred, recent on-chain metrics reflect mounting caution among market participants.
On-Chain Metrics and Trading Activity
On Binance, the weekly Taker Buy/Sell Ratio dropped to 0.95, reaching its lowest level in over four months and indicating that taker sells outnumbered taker buys. Additional market uncertainty stems from Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, who recently transferred 133,298 ETH, valued at over $356 million, to a new wallet.
Furthermore, staking and fund flow data show additional signs of pressure:
- The Ethereum exit queue has climbed to 773,447 ETH, marking the highest level since the beginning of 2026 and representing staked assets waiting to exit.
- Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded a one-day net outflow of 5,171 ETH, equivalent to approximately $13.89 million.
These combined signals indicate that the prevailing fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) extends beyond social sentiment and is now visible in on-chain positioning. With Ethereum having appreciated by more than 70% during the previous quarter, analysts note that the asset may be due for a reality check and a potential market reversal if these bearish trends persist through October.
