Ethereum Holds Near $2,700 Despite ETF Outflows and Derivatives Selling Pressure

Ethereum is trading near $2,700 as institutional demand weakens and derivatives traders increase selling pressure, though the broader price structure has held firm.

US spot ETH exchange-traded funds recorded $50.76 million in net outflows on October 5, extending a losing streak to five consecutive sessions. The products have shed $205.88 million since September 29, reducing cumulative net inflows to approximately $13.75 billion, according to SoSoValue data.

The outflow streak marks a reversal from a $17.1 million inflow recorded on September 28, removing one of the market's major sources of incremental demand at a critical time for Ethereum's price trajectory.

Mixed Signals from On-Chain Activity

Ethereum's Age Consumed metric, which tracks previously dormant coins moving on-chain, surged to 580 million token-days on September 30, roughly nine times its September weekday average and the highest reading since June 2. Large spikes can signal that long-term holders are repositioning assets and potentially preparing to sell.

However, aggregate exchange balances tell a different story. Ethereum held on exchanges rose by only about 18,000 ETH on September 30 before falling roughly 21,000 ETH on October 1, against approximately 5.9 million ETH held on trading venues. This contrasts sharply with June 2, when a similar spike in Age Consumed corresponded with exchange balances increasing by more than 140,000 ETH.

The modest change in exchange balances suggests that the September activity may have reflected custody transfers, staking movements, or wallet reorganizations rather than broad distribution by older holders.

Derivatives Markets Show Bearish Lean

Ethereum's Estimated Leverage Ratio has fallen to 0.66, its lowest level in seven months, indicating that open derivatives exposure has declined relative to ETH reserves held on exchanges. This decline suggests weaker appetite for heavily leveraged positions as ETH trades around $2,700, potentially easing liquidation pressure.

On Binance, ETH open interest remains near $3.3 billion, up from approximately $2.3 billion on August 6—a roughly 43% increase. However, Cumulative Net Taker Volume has swung sharply in the opposite direction, falling from $1.94 billion on August 21 to negative $1.36 billion on October 5. The negative reading shows sellers increasingly crossing the spread to execute trades.

Despite the surge in aggressive selling, Ethereum remains roughly 44% above its August 6 level, meaning the increase in negative taker volume has yet to unwind the broader price advance.

Three Forces in Tension

ETF investors are withdrawing capital, dormant coins are moving while aggregate exchange balances remain little changed, and derivatives traders are selling more aggressively while maintaining substantial exposure. The next move in Ethereum's price could come from either direction.

Continued ETF withdrawals paired with a meaningful rise in exchange balances would broaden selling pressure beyond financial products. Conversely, if exchange reserves remain contained and ETH continues absorbing negative derivatives flow, traders running short exposure could become increasingly vulnerable to any recovery in institutional demand or a shift in funding conditions.
