Ethereum traders on Binance experienced a significant liquidation event during an October 8-9 sell-off, with approximately $345 million in long positions forced to close, according to CryptoQuant analysis published October 16, 2026.
ETH declined roughly 10% from its September highs, falling from approximately $2,775 to approximately $2,500. The decline was sufficient to trigger the liquidations on the exchange.
Market Structure Shifts
Long liquidations on Binance increased by 47% during the event. Funding rates on the exchange dropped to near zero, indicating that the crowd of leveraged traders has thinned considerably. Funding rates are periodic payments that keep perpetual futures prices aligned with spot prices; high rates typically signal crowded optimism among long traders.
Binance's ETH futures open interest fell 4.7% over 30 days to around $6.1 billion, representing roughly half of the total market.
Despite the decline in dollar-denominated open interest, Binance's share of ETH futures open interest climbed to approximately 49% following the liquidations—the highest level since 2023. When measured in ETH rather than dollars, open interest rebounded to approximately 2.46 million ETH, suggesting traders are reopening positions after the flush rather than exiting the market.
Conditions Remain Neutral Without New Capital
CryptoQuant characterizes current conditions as neutral rather than bullish. While the leverage reset has lowered liquidation risk, USDT reserves on Binance decreased by 2.3%, reflecting a net outflow of approximately $175 million. A sustained recovery typically requires fresh capital flowing into exchanges.
Two key metrics warrant monitoring. The Coinbase Premium—the price gap between ETH on Coinbase and other exchanges—is watched as a potential indicator of renewed institutional interest. Additionally, observers should track whether USDT reserves on exchanges begin climbing again and whether funding rates remain subdued as ETH-denominated open interest continues to rebuild.
Binance ETH reserves fell by 2.4%, indicating lower supply pressure. Ethereum's staking rate currently sits at 36.1%, placing it in the 98.6th percentile.
