As the fourth quarter begins, optimism around Ethereum prices is growing. BitMine Research CEO Tom Lee has forecast Ethereum reaching $5,000 by year-end, while the company maintains over 6 million ETH in treasury reserves.
Bullish positioning has intensified in derivatives markets. ETH long positions on Bitfinex have reached their highest level in four years, with the Long/Short Ratio hitting a weekly peak of 1.12. One trader recently opened a $43.4 million ETH long position at 25x leverage near $2,500, generating approximately $289,800 in unrealized profits from a modest 0.67% price movement.
ETF Outflows Challenge Bullish Outlook
The bullish narrative faces significant headwinds. Spot Ethereum ETFs experienced $542 million in net outflows over the past week, marking their worst weekly performance since January, when outflows totaled $611 million across five trading days.
Additional selling pressure may come from major holders. Two wallets associated with the Ethereum Foundation deposited 4,393 ETH worth approximately $11.13 million to Kraken recently. These wallets had received 59,751 ETH from the Foundation approximately 10 years ago.
Leverage and Volatility Risks
The concentration of leveraged long positions creates vulnerability to a long squeeze, which could add downward pressure on price. Combined with increased market volatility and ETF outflows, reaching the $5,000 target appears increasingly challenging in the current market environment.
